Churchill Heritage Collection "Never Give In" | Sir Winston Churchill

Winston Churchill (1874-1965) was a man so influential that he inspired his own adjective, “Churchillian”. While there may be few Churchillian types around today, here at Conway Stewart we continue to celebrate the great man – both his first and last names have been leant to the Churchill and the Winston models. Conway Stewart was also very proud to provide pens as props for the 2017 Churchill biopic Darkest Hour.

In association with Churchill Heritage Conway Stewart has produced the Conway Stewart Churchill Heritage Collection, a series of limited edition writing instruments with designs inspired by the words of the great man himself. “Never Give In” is the second in the series.

“EASILY SATISFIED WITH THE VERY BEST”

As one of the most significant figures of the 20th Century, Sir Winston Churchill’s premiership during World War Two is known the world over for helping to bring about an allied victory. In 2002 he took the top spot in a list of the 100 Greatest Britons as voted for by the public. Fifty-five years after his death he continues to be remembered and his wise words continue to inspire.

In October 1941, for the second time during his time as Prime Minister he visited his alma mater of Harrow School. Preceding his speech the song “Stet Fortuna Domus” was performed with an additional verse that praised Churchill during the “darker days” of the ongoing war.

Churchill took issue with the term “darker days”, so in his address he stated "These are not dark days, these are great days - the greatest our nation has ever lived!" Later in his address to the students Churchill proclaimed that the lesson that needed to be learned from the previously few months was:
"Never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never - in nothing great or small, large or petty - never give in except to conviction of honour and good sense."

And so the phrase “never give in” was given a Churchillian touch.

CRAFTED WITH CARE

All the pens in the Churchill Heritage Collection are based on the classic Conway Stewart Churchill design and feature a number of connections to Churchill’s great mind and personality. The second pen in the collection has an engraved barrel with the rousing phrase “Never Give In” elegantly etched into it. Below that is an engraved recreation of Churchill’s signature and the mark of pride that each Conway Stewart pen is “Made in Britain”.

Engraved on the top of the cap of all the Heritage pens is the iconic sketch of “Pug”. Clementine, Churchill’s wife, called Winston “my sweet pug” – as result, in their correspondence he often drew small illustrations of a pug. The illustration which features on the cap is taken from a letter sent to Clementine dated 1st August 1909, a facsimile of which accompanies each pen showing his handwriting in all its glory.

Each pen in the Churchill Heritage Collection comes in a large Conway Stewart presentation box housed inside of a replica red cabinet box which would have been used to transport his ministerial papers from home to the office. The lid of the red cabinet box has another one of his famous quotes, “I have always earned my living by my pen” – a sentiment which should inspire us all.

A companion book entitled “All Will Be Well: Good Advice From Winston Churchill” comes with every pen in the Churchill Heritage Collection. It features 120 quotes, phrases and sayings penned by the former Prime Minister.

CHURCHILL HERITAGE COLLECTION

Up to 20% of every pen sold goes to the Churchill Heritage to help organise events and education to keep alive the memory of Sir Winston Churchill and his wise words for future generations.

The Conway Stewart Churchill Heritage Collection will feature six models, each one inspired by a famous phrase of his and only 100 of each model will be made. Every pen comes with a certificate detailing the edition number. The first in the series is “All Will Be Well”. The third in the series is “Action This Day”.

Winston Churchill has long been an inspiration to Conway Stewart, but he’s not the only individual to lend their name to a model of ours – other notable people include William Shakespeare, William Wordsworth and Sir Walter Raleigh. Other iterations of the Conway Churchill model include the Turing-Welchman Pen, the Lawyer’s Pen and the Conway Stewart Churchill Poppy.
