Le Jour de la Victoire en Europe, également connu sous le nom de VE-Day,  est le jour célébrant l’acceptation formelle, par les Alliés, de la capitulation sans conditions des forces armées allemandes lors de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le mardi 8 mai 1945, marquant la fin officielle de la Seconde Guerre mondiale en Europe. 

Cette journée marquante remonte à 80 ans le 8 mai 2025, mais le début de la fin de la puissance militaire nazie a commencé le D-Day, le 6 juin 1944, lorsque les forces alliées ont lancé la plus grande opération combinée navale, aérienne et terrestre de l'histoire militaire. Baptisée opération 'Overlord', les débarquements du D-Day en Normandie ont marqué le début d'une campagne de onze mois qui a finalement libéré l'Europe occupée.

Le général Dwight D. Eisenhower rédigea son célèbre Ordre du Jour le 6 juin 1944, depuis le Quartier général suprême des forces expéditionnaires alliées, à l'attention des 156,000 soldats, déclarant :

"Soldiers, Sailors, and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force!

You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hope and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.

Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely.

But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to Victory!

I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full Victory!

Good luck! And let us beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking."

Pour commémorer ce 80e anniversaire, Conway Stewart a lancé le stylo Poppy D-Day 80th Anniversary, sur le corps duquel est gravée la célèbre citation du général Eisenhower " The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to Victory!"

Saviez-vous que le D-Day ne se limite pas aux débarquements de Normandie ? Le terme D-Day est une désignation militaire générale pour la date de lancement de toute opération majeure, le D signifiant « day » (jour). Il est utilisé lorsque la date exacte est soit secrète, soit indéterminée. Si la Normandie est la plus célèbre, de nombreux autres D-Day cruciaux ont eu lieu durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.
