What followed would change the course of history. Designed by R.J. Mitchell, powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine and instantly recognisable by its elliptical wing, the Spitfire became the aircraft that helped win the Battle of Britain and is a lasting symbol of great British engineering.
